More Than Just Cleanups

protect our oceans

One of the core missions of Drty Blue is to protect the oceans. When we first explored ways to help the cause, the vision was clear: get rid of the pollution in our oceans. Many of us have seen the images of sea turtles entangled in 6-pack plastic rings or the seabirds with bellies full of bright-colored plastics. It’s a reminder of the impact humans have inflicted on the marine environment. However, when we investigated solutions, specifically for solving plastic pollution in our oceans, the answer seemed varied: the best way to make meaningful change was not to simply scoop out the plastic but required a mix of strategies that attack the problem from all sides.

More than 250 million tons of plastic are expected to make their way into our oceans by 2025. Cleanups play a big role — researchers agree they’re effective — but we need more than just that. One of the first and most important steps to limit plastic pollution is by addressing the pollution sources. This means requiring governments around the world to reduce and eliminate plastic waste, for companies to produce and use less plastic, and encouraging less single-use plastics. We’re also lucky to live in a time of innovation. Take the Mr. Trash Wheel Family, four interceptors that remove trash from Baltimore, MD waterways. Or the Seabin, a floating contraption that captures microplastics and other debris around ports and harbors.

At Drty Blue, we’re doing our part too. We’re committed to minimizing our plastic use and using sustainable practices when our production kicks off in 2025. We want to create a drink that will not leave a negative mark on the planet. We’re also encouraging you — our awesome community — to recycle Drty Blue cans and be mindful of where your waste ends up.

Plus, we’re backing efforts to clean up marine debris and monitor sites through our partners at the PADI AWARE Foundation. It is through this non-profit that the world’s largest citizen science project to document locations of marine debris is possible. This will ultimately lead to change policy to reduce waste at every level.

At Drty Blue, we’re stoked to be part of the solution. Check out our Clean Oceans page where we talk more about our partnership with the PADI AWARE Foundation! We’re not just here for a good time — we’re here to make a real difference for our oceans.
